Stay and Play in Sonoma Wine Country

For years, Napa Valley was considered the most notable of California wine regions. But as both California residents and wine lovers, we prefer Sonoma Wine Country.  Sonoma is what Napa was 40 years ago – less crowded, less commercialized, and more authentic.

Sonoma is the birthplace of California’s wine industry boasting 425 wineries dotting its picturesque landscape. The perfect place for wine tasting.

With rushing rivers, meandering streams, ancient redwood forests, rolling hills, and misty ocean breezes, Sonoma’s been blessed by Mother Nature. Situated just 30 miles from San Francisco, this extraordinary region is home to some of the world’s best winemakers, brewers, cheese-makers, artisans, and culinary specialists.

Where to Stay in Sonoma County

We absolutely loved staying at Fairmont Sonoma Mission Inn and Spa. Nestled in picturesque Sonoma Valley, the luxurious yet unpretentious historic resort delights visitors with exquisite accommodations, stunning grounds, five-star service, and impressive amenities.

Native Americans first discovered the underground hot mineral waters here. Today, this 1927 resort remains renowned for its thermal streams, mineral pools, and revitalizing spa and body treatments.

A more moderately-priced yet beautiful property, Hyatt Regency Sonoma is located in the heart of Santa Rosa’s historic downtown, and walking distance to numerous restaurants and historic sites. With a stunning lobby and well-appointment rooms, it’s a definite option for a more budget-conscious traveler.

Play at the Vineyards

Wineries here run the gamut of hilltop castle fortresses, and garden chateaus to organic ranches.

Here are a few of our favorites from our most recent visit.

Buena Vista Winery is a must-do. Founder Agoston Haraszthy, the self-proclaimed “Count of Buena Vista,” emigrated to Sonoma from Hungary. The property is magnificent, but the real treasures lie within the walls of the historic Press House and Champagne Cellars. From the eccentric Cave of Curiosities to the eclectic tasting rooms and a fascinating wine history museum, it’s one unique experience.

Jordan Vineyard & Winery offers private tours and tastings at its verdant picturesque property tucked among the rolling hills of Alexander Valley. With more grapevines than the eye can behold, this French-inspired chateau also sports 18 acres of olive trees, two lakes, and a herd of donkeys and goats grazing contentedly in pastures.

Champagne lovers will be happy to know that Korbel Champagne Cellars established in 1882 is located here. The winery offers a range of dazzling and tantalizing French-style champagnes at no cost for tasting. Visitors can stroll the awe-inspiring historic property nestled in a towering redwood grove enjoying its vine-covered bricked buildings and flower-filled walkways.

Play in Sonoma County Towns

Historic Santa Rosa is home to a myriad of farmers markets than one can count. Old Courthouse and Railroad Squares seamlessly meld history with family-friendly urban growth. Easily walkable squares make exploring the vibrant area convenient and fun.

A mere five minutes outside of Guerneville in Western Sonoma County sits the majestic redwood-studded forests of Armstrong Redwoods State Preserve. It’s worth the 10-dollar parking fee for a chance to walk through the serene ancient groves of these magnificent giants, some towering over 350-feet.

Sonoma’s downtown Victorian plaza is ringed with tasting rooms, cheese and olive oil shops, charming restaurants and boutique stores.

Where to Dine in Sonoma County

If you only dine one place in the town of Sonoma, it should be at the charming French-inspired Girl and the Fig. Serving up an array of creative delights, many made with figs, along with local cheeses, we have always found the food and service superb food at this lovely eatery.

A newly discovered treasure for us, legendary John Ash & Co on the outskirts of Santa Rosa is extremely romantic, stunningly beautiful, and utterly magical at night with its candlelit and string-lighted outdoor patio. It’s finer dining, but, perfect for a special occasion. Food quality here certainly matches the spectacular ambience.

On our latest weekend getaway to spectacular Sonoma, we only scratched the surface of all this splendid region has to offer. But that only gives us reason to go back…and you as the traveler a perfect reason to visit!
